Disappointing. This is what comes to my mind after eating this protein bar from Optimum Nutrition. So as you can see, sometimes a specific brand doesn’t mean much.
And I know, the overall score of 7/10 pts is pretty impressive. And I bet many protein bar makers would do a lot to score that high in our reviews. But again, this is Optimum Nutrition. A Gold Standard as they say here and there. But this time, something went wrong. Or, actually, not only this time. Anyway, this Optimum Nutrition Optimum Protein Bar Rocky Road Flavour could be much better than it is.
Aaand it starts impressively. This protein bar smells lovely and inviting. Rocky Road flavour is easily detectable and it seems to scream ‘eat me!’. And my thought seems to scream back ‘I’ll do that!’. And to do that, what I have to do first is to bite into it. And as this protein bar is decently soft both on the outside and on the inside, it’s incredibly effortless to bite into it. Well done. What is not so surprising, though, is its texture. This bar is significantly chewy and pretty sticky. Therefore, don’t forget to have a sip while eating it.
A Rocky Road flavour? Can be. But that bitterish aroma is nothing like that.
I expected it to be a delicious and satisfying protein bar. Eventually, it’s from Optimum Nutrition, right? And it’s Rocky Road flavour. However, what I got here was some kind of disappointment. Firstly, this protein bar has a bitterish flavour. And then, after that, you can taste its primary flavour. I mean Rocky Road flavour. Sort of. It’s actually not a tasty, flavourish Rocky Road flavour. It’s more like a sweet protein bar that resembles Rocky Road flavour. Also, it’s decently sweet (nearly oversweet) and that sweetness seems to come purely from sweeteners. It’s a specific kind of sweetness I’m not a great fan of. Generally, it lacks that great taste and flavour balance we know. Anyway, it will definitely make its way as a sweet treat, but it may be not satisfying for many, including me.
Do I want another serving of this Optimum Nutrition protein bar after the first one? Not actually. It was too sweet for me. And I didn’t like its taste much. Therefore, one bar is more than enough for me.
When it comes to the macros of this protein bar, it’s not that bad. A 60g bar has only 202 kcal, 5.9g of fat, 19g of carbs (of which 1.5g of sugar) and 20g of protein. Not too bad. The ingredients list is free from added sugar, palm oil or syrups. I like it.
However, considering it has not the best taste, it can’t be the finest protein bar on the go.
Get out of my (Rocky) ‘Road’, mate.
Optimum Nutrition Optimum Protein Bar Rocky Road Flavour is definitely not a Gold Standard. It doesn’t taste good, it’s a bit too sweet, and its ingredients could be a bit better. On the other hand, it has not bad macros indeed. But still, it’s nothing I have expected from Optimum Nutrition, both brand and experience. Is this a time to open my eyes?
Will I ever go back to this Optimum Nutrition protein bar? Although it scored a solid 7/10 pts, I won’t. It’s not even very good in its taste protein bar. And if I wanted a protein bar of this taste, then I’d go for Macro Munch Really Rocky Road bar. It’s not perfect either, but it’s much tastier than this one.

This is definitely not a Gold Standard. It doesn’t taste good, it’s a bot too sweet, and its ingredients could be a bit better. On the other hand, it has not bad macros indeed. But still, it’s nothing I have expected of Optimum Nutrition, both brand and experience. Is this a time to open my eyes?
